What the role is

What you will be working on

Based at the Singapore Botanic Gardens (Research & Conservation branch), you will work closely with the Principal Researcher (Zingiberales) and Research Collection Curator (Zingiberales) to collect and process herbarium vouchers and spirit specimens, DNA sample collection and handle photo-documentation of living accessions including flower dissections and microphotography.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-driven individual, who is passionate about plant research and conservation, and curation of natural history collections of national and international importance, to join our team of like-minded colleagues.

You will handle basic collection curation-related processes that includes, constant use of a ladder to retrieve and shelve the specimens and the preparation of specimens for mounting. You will actively participate in the preparation of the collections for the upcoming digitisation project.

You will also gather data from existing herbarium and photographic records and published scientific literature and assist with plant description and basic write-ups. Occasionally, you may be requested to join local field surveys.

What we are looking for

• Diploma in Horticulture, Life/Environmental Sciences or equivalent
• Proficient in dissecting and taking photographs of the flower parts
• Able to carry out basic photo editing using Adobe Photoshop.
• Experienced in using Microsoft Excel and aptitude to learn new database software (BRAHMS)
• Strong interest in plants, preferably with basic knowledge of plant identification and plant nomenclature
• Enjoys working in an outdoor field environment
• Well organised, meticulous, able to work as a team-player and independently with a positive attitude

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified. The successful candidate will be appointed on a 9-month contract.
